With a feelgood superfood smoothie I’d like to introduce you to the magic of Maca Root. If you haven’t added Maca Root as a supplement you might want to give it a try! I find it best added to smoothies or homemade granola/protein bars. This chocolate superfood shake is a delicious healthy treat packed with nutrients that will give you a boost of high energy. It’s perfect for breakfast on days when you need a little extra something or if you’re in the mood for something chocolaty and guilt-free. I love it mid afternoon, and after a workout…anytime really!
Maca – Maca is a powerful adaptogen, which means it has the ability to balance and stabilize all of the body’s systems. It provides a sustainable source of energy, balances the hormones (whether you are male or female) and has been known to aid in relief of depression. According to Navitas (the brand I use), maca root has been used in indigenous Andean societies as a source of nourishment and healing for thousands of years, and continues to be one of the most appreciated superfoods today. Used to increase stamina, boost libido, and combat fatigue, maca root has long been regarded as a highly adaptogenic food.
Raw cacao is the #1 antioxidant content food in world. That’s right. It contains more antioxidants than green tea, acai, red wine, and goji berries COMBINED. It tops the chart in its concentration of magnesium, chromium, and iron. According to Navitas Naturals which is the brand of cacao I purchase, cacao contains many chemicals that enhance physical and mental well-being, including an incredibly rich supply of magnesium. Other essential minerals present in cacao are calcium, zinc, iron, copper and potassium. Cacao also contains more antioxidant flavonoids than red wine, green tea and blueberries.
Hempseeds (my personal favorite seeds) are packed with protein. 3 tablespoons = 11 grams of protein! These little guys are also loaded with Omega 3 fats and the beauty minerals magnesium, zinc, iron, and phosphorus.
Maca, Cacao, Cherries, and Hemp Seeds Raw Smoothie:
- 1.5 cups of almond milk
- 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 Tbsp hemp seeds
- 1 Tbsp of raw maca powder
- 1/4 cup Frozen Organic Cherries
- 2 tsp raw local honey
Blend until smooth and serve immediately. Sometimes I will add a tablespoon of almond butter to this, and often I add a pinch of pink Himalayan salt for it’s mineral content as well. Enjoy!
